Gary and Michelle met on a San Francisco singles site on the internet. He thought she was interesting because she is a scientist who would understand jokes about goofballs who pour water into strong acids. She liked his singles ad because it wasn't too self centered. Beyond science, they had Goa India in common. He thought Goa was the most relaxing place he visited on his trip around the world and her family is from that former Portuguese Colony.

After a while on the internet and phone, Michelle invited Gary to lunch at the Beach House in Golden Gate Park. They spent the whole afternoon walking around the park and talking. They liked each other and found they had nature and hiking in common. Their next few dates were hikes in local hills. They took up bird watching and mushroom hunting.

After more than a year, Gary made an engagement ring from a eBay diamond and a krugerand. He brought Michelle to the beach in San Francisco where they had their first date and he asked her to marry him.
